Drapetomania or Paradise invented

Oh no, it’s not about that old «runaway slave syndrome» devised for obvious reasons by American pseudoscientists in the mid-19 cent. Those bad connotations forgotten today, the word seems to have taken up a new meaning, but still, yes, it remains a ‘syndrome’ alright, though this time a cultural, not a psychological one, to be sure. Just google it up and you will see. Given that, I took the liberty to update the definition by adding a few words. It goes as follows:
Drapetomania: «an overwhelming urge to be free, to find Paradise; if nessecary, to invent it.»
However, the point of this article, my readers, lies not upon terminology but upon photography. Because, in my opinion, the choice of photos I am presenting to you today possess one unique feature: a perfect, subtle balance between the animate and the inanimate, between the organic and the inorganic, and if you wish as well, the finitness of the self and the infiniteness of the cosmos. Having taken part myself in shootings like this in the past, I know from first hand that during the process (as long as the photographer is gifted) there is point when all forms merge into oneness and all feelings disappear.
Looking at certain scenes with half-closed eyes blinded by the merciless glow, you can’t really tell if the human is rock or the rock is human (or animal). It’s a moment of trance and transition, a moment when I can’t help but agree with Albert Camus:
«The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion.»
But I have to restaint myself and not let my words shadow the work of the artist. Behold therefore now Elena’s appasionados por la libertad. Look at them as they ‘draptsise’ to another world, neither christian or pagan: the world of crystallic rock surfaces, deep clear water and scorching sunlight. It’s a paradise neither lost, nor won. It’s a paradise invented. 😉

Aye! That was a challenge! They said that my posts based upon and inspired from Instagram shots taken in Ikaria are ok, but they’d rather see instead my own old or newer photos time and again, because, as they said, they are dowed with a quality different from I/G. And that quality is, as they said again, that they are fundamental. I am not really sure of the meaning and I will certainly not bother anybody with guesses. Whatever they meant, I straightforwardly took it as a compliment, and as a gesture of thanks, I am assembling this post with the idea of fundamentality flashing in my head, and as I am doing so, I realize that I know no other with this attribute (i.g. fundamental) than freedom, nature and womanhood.
Therefore, behold my friends and supporters, under a title borrowed from one of my albums on Flickr a total of eighty-eight (including the header) photos about freedom, nature and womanhood, the last two interrelating, interchanging, interacting. There is also some sport and a bit of farming and other stuff too, ok? Being fundamental doesn’t mean being always coherent, I think. 😉
NOTE 1: The first rows are thumbnails from my Flickr, while the rest come from our blogs, Eleni’s and mine.
NOTE 2: Comments under this post are disabled. You may visit the photos in the source instead. They contain so many additions, links and comments, that each one makes an article of its own. Check them out and feel free to add your comments there.
NOTE 3: I have marked in color the thumbnails opening to the most significant pictures, according to my opinion.
Big thanks.

Celebrating the beginning of summer and the end of the covid-19 lockdown in Greece, while our friends are back and our days and nights are busy, I am hastily writing up this post made out of three short topics.
The first is that, on this occasion, I travelled into outer cyberspace and picked up one of my old profile pictures. I think it’s the oldest and, like everything, it’s also connected to a story, but never mind for now; you can just read the short version hidden behind the image.
The second and most important is, of course, about art; land art in particular – so suitable for Ikaria and it’s wild solitary landscapes. So, I am presenting here a few amazing stone works by the renowned visual artist Manfred Flucke, also known as Deva Manfredo, that I fished out from his facebook page.
Four out of ten were made in Ikaria, as I am sure I can recognize the site where the photos were taken, and that’s most likely Nas. Judging from the color and the kind of the stone, I also suspect that two others were made in Seychelles beach. The remaining four were probably made elsewhere in the world. Yet, they might as well have been in Ikaria because of the light, the shadows and the landscapes in the background which all seem so familiar. They are almost identical to ours!
On facebook, Manfred entitles this collection «OPERE IN NATURA» («Works in Nature»). I liked this wonderfully simple title so I chose to borrow it for my article.
And now see the photos!

I am closing this article with just another German artist, photographer Charleen Dahms. Last year probably, she took a photo in Nas, that I like very much.
The foundations of the ancient temple, hardly discernible among spiky spurges and broken pieces.of white marble, and two female figures standing naked on the top bathed in the dim yellow light of the setting sun with the little cave just below their feet…
I find there is something strongly primal and elemental in the scene. I think Charleen has captured the essence of this magical wild place.

Through that experience, also, I saw that countless sites and sceneries of this island, wild and free by nature and culture, are very suitable for the genre. Beyond that, as it happens with art, the results, when exhibited, get back to the locations as an appraisal to their quality. I have pointed that out in 2014. It feels like my message has reached the proper recipients.
I am glad
