Blue jelly

This is Masteress ~Choughtra~ the jelly fish, the Sea Wasp, the nettlesome Sea nettle of the Aegean. She’s dancing in her blue haze, waving her purple green neurotoxins. This photo was taken this morning so it’s still a bit wet. Isn’t it obvious?

Masteress ~Choughtra~ is almost a plant, lies in between kingdoms of plant and animal. Watching her doing her acrobatics has a magnetizing effect. You tend to be drawn towards her. Maybe it’s part of her plan. Have I read somewhere that she is a unicellular organism? If she is, she is not at all stupid.

They usually swim in schools. But this one was a loner.

Have you ever pissed on your hand (on purpose)? This is the right thing to do if you are stung by Masteress ~Choughtra~ . Lay your urine on the stung area. No better than you own home-body-madeammonia to disintegrate the neurotoxin. Only that you have to stay “pissed” for a few minutes.

   agrimi08

*** boys : if you don’t wear a swimsuit and you see jelly fish, the first thing to do is to turn your rear on them. Getting stung on your genitals not only is painful but may cause unwanted effects that prudence forbids me to describe.

p.s.3: was all that clever enough?

Sunday July 15, 2007 – 10:18am (EEST)

truly this is a threatening animal – I for one will wear thick shorts in the Med from now on.
I have just been reading about the Sea Nettle’s cousin the Mauve Stinger:

The youtube bit is good too, though I can’t work out what the Nivea Sphere is doing – does hand cream prevent stings?

This is Master Natrix Natrixthe watersnake. The beautiful Latin name which reminds of names for submarines or jet planes or missiles, fits him perfectly. Master Natrix swims like a torpedo. If you are not a frog, don’t be afraid of him. He doesn’t have poison. He simply doesn’t need it. Though I know this very well, yet many times I have freaked out while dipping in a calm pool when I saw Master Natrix blast off across from one side to the other. They tell me that I should slam on the surface of water and the snake would make a U turn on the spot and hide away.

.

Link to: Always back to angels’ pools in spring. But I was never able to do that. All the 3 times I saw Master Natrix, I screamed and jumped out of the water. It is harmless, nevertheless. It’s like a torpedo without a load or an arrow without a sharp point. And it never aims on humans. Yet, it’s freakish. The fear of snakes is very deep inside us.

Is it the kind that has a trapdoor instead of a web?

Sunday May 6, 2007 – 10:50pm (CEST)

I’d rather not say, nor have I given Nana the info and the story she had waited for. But since you asked, this is the «bird-eater». It lives on trees and jumps from branch to branch to catch birds. It can jump on the ground too as high as 2 meters. So sometimes they call it the jumper spider. Brrrr!…

I am changing my mind about wanting to come to Ikaria…

Monday May 7, 2007 – 04:24pm (CEST)

Oh come on, SimonG… You will change it back. Authentic wild places host authentic wild bugs!… hi hi hi … And then, what did you think? Why Ikaria is not so touristic like the other islands? he he he

Monday May 7, 2007 – 10:59pm (EEST)

You say that Nan, but I have seen these spiders on Symi….Mind you, they scare the tourists to death, not what they expect to see there!

This is Master Tyrannosaurus Stelio –the “crocodile” of Ikaria, Mykonos and other islands. The biggest I have seen was about 45 cm long. It makes a claka-laka-clak when walking. Master Stelio can run very fast. Then it makes chiki-chiki-chiki-chak. Stelios eat flies. Far back in the Jurassic period their big ancestors may have been eating flies too. I don’t want to know how big the flies were in those times.

In Ikaria they call them “korkofilas” which is a corruption of the ancient Greek word “krokodilos” –the crocodile. People think that it’s because they look like crocodiles. This is the story:

«The crocodile gets its name from the Greeks who observed them in the Nile river. The Greeks called them krokodilos, a compound word from kroke, which means «pebbles» and drilos, which means «worm». To the Greeks, this «worm of the stones» was so named because of the crocodiles habit of basking in the sun on gravel-covered river banks.»
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crocodile

.The most ferocious and violent animal of Ikaria! 😉 by Nana to agrimi on Flickr

.

This is Master Wicked Marten, (Martes martes, loc. «Atsida») the most ferocious and violent animal of Ikaria. Or at least this how the New Round of Rahes on Foot describes it: small sized but fierce predator. I like to call it “weasel” but in fact it’s a marten. It’s called “nyfitsa” or “kounavi” in Greek. It is very common in Ikaria and in some other islands. The people in Ikaria use the local name “atsida” which means something like “wizard”. So it is “The Wicked Wizard”!

.

The Wicked Wizard has very sharp teeth and four pointed canines like a vampire. It comes out at night, finds its victims, strangles them and sucks their blood (I can’t tell you which it does first; I suppose it’s the sucking.) Then the Atsida/Wizard is happy and shrieks. When I was with Eleni in Ikaria and heard that shriek in the middle of the night, we liked to imagine that we were in some remote exotic land.

.Pine marten on our roof
.

Some Atsidas repent for their sins and go vegetarian. So you can see them on trees looking for fruit. Or they may be pretending. Atsidas are very cunning animals.

Sweet? Have you heard it shrieking? And those cute cheeks do you know what deadly sharp teeth hide behind them? And the fixed gaze? (your death=my life) I LOVE IT! 😅 ❤

Master Scorpion

.
Ikarian Scorpion in July
.

This is Master Scorpion. The sting at the tip of his tail is painful especially in spring. He is slow and shy so he goes out only at night. The problem with him is that when he sees danger he can’t walk backwards easily. So he gets panicked and he stings –sometimes he stings himself!

.
.

Master Scorpion hates light. Like in all the islands, there used to be many scorpions in Ikaria too. But now there seem to be less and less. The people here say this is not because of pollution etc. but because of electricity. Master scorpion doesn’t like even the distant glow from electric bulbs. He likes to work in pitch dark.

What’s “pitch dark”? Pitch dark is when you raise your eyes to the sky and you see the galaxy –the stars of the Milky Way.

.
.

When you are out and you can see the whole Milky river, check if you are wearing flip-flops.

.

.

If you are, jump onto your boyfriends’ arms. There are scorpions around and a string on your ankle is not a joke. Have your boyfriend carry you like that until you reach the nearest light.

Light or not, at night you don’t have to worry about scorpions when you are near the sea. Salt in the air keeps scorpions away –in Ikaria at least. The Ikarian Scorpions like it sweet, not salty.

.

Well, in June sometimes we meet this horrible scary monster. It’s huge but don’t worry; it’s just a stupid bug. Unlike a rhino’s, this bug’s horn is not for defence or aggression. It’s a piece of cutlery –a knife actually. The bug uses it to stab big balls of shit and carries them away to to eat them in peace inside its nest. The amazing thing about this shit lover: it flies!!!

WithAn-124-100 RA-82042 by konstantinople a ball of shit on its nose and its wings spread and buzzing, it reminds the enormous Russian cargo plane, Antonov A-255 brrrrrrmmmmm……

Dim the flying rhino bug

However, you can have Disney’s version, Dim the rhino bug starring in «A Bug’s Life» (1998). I think he’s the best.
