Hello, this is Angelos!
I have a friend fireman (they also do salvage and recovery) who takes pleasure in telling me stories about hikers wounded or lost in impossible places around the island, hikers who were found and saved by the local rescue teams. When, my friend said, the rescuers asked the unfortunate hikers how they got to that place, they took out and showed them standard maps with various trails marked on them.
Only that, though the lines on those maps were very convincing, the trails themselves weren’t visible or did not exist at all. The hikers found themselves following abstract lines drawn by somebody on a piece of paper, whereas there was nothing on the ground; no signs, no marks. Just bushes and rocks. And the inevidable and very perplexing goat trails.
Cases of lost and distressed hikers are few in Ikaria, however, as more and more maps come about showing -besides motor roads- (…) “hiking trails” (…), I am obliged to warn every hiker of Ikaria to mistrust these publications and to not venture outside the marked paths.
A hiking route marked in orange (or other) is a route that takes you somewhere. And most importantly, when you are tired, it’s a route that takes you back home.
Notice, for example, the cliffs in the following photos by Zack Kavarligkos connected here through Facebook. The hikers are young and they are from the island so they don’t care.
But YOU STRANGER don’t ride on the Ikarian cliffs just because a map tells you so. Don’t ride, if you see no marking.

Μια μέρα που ένιωθα να μ’ έχουν εγκαταλείψει όλα και μια μεγάλη θλίψη να πέφτει αργά στην ψυχή μου, τράβηξα, κει που περπατούσα, μες στα χωράφια χωρίς σωτηρία, ένα κλωνάρι άγνωστου θάμνου. Το ‘κοψα και το ‘φερα στο απάνω χείλι μου. Ευθύς αμέσως κατάλαβα ότι ο άνθρωπος είναι αθώος. Το διάβασα σ’ αυτή τη στυφή από αλήθεια ευωδιά τόσο έντονα που πήρα να προχωρώ το δρόμο της μ’ ελαφρύ βήμα και καρδιά ιεραπόστολου. Ώσπου, σε μεγάλο βάθος, μου έγινε συνείδηση πια ότι όλες οι θρησκείες λέγανε ψέματα. Ναι, ο Παράδεισος δεν ήταν μια νοσταλγία. Ούτε, πολύ περισσότερο, μια ανταμοιβή. Ήταν ένα δικαίωμα. 9 απλές βδομάδες στην Ικαρία – 1 αναπάντεχη ανακάλυψη
H ιστορία ήταν ότι, όταν παραδυνάμωσε το μελτέμι,
πήραμε κάποια πανηγύρια και
- και μετά φύγαμε για βουνά
Εγώ (to agrimi) οδηγώ ως συνήθως 
(γιατί; γιατί έτσι.) Στο σπίτι άλλοι ποτίζουν, φροντίζουν, κοιμούνται. Εμείς στο βουνό τώρα Όουου Όόόιι! Σχεδόν ομίχλη, σύννεφα κουρέλια τρέχουν, βουνό ρε παιδί μου…
Περίεργο αυτό, καινούριο ίσως, συναντάμε ανθρώπους που και που. Έχει καλά μέρη. Έχει όλο και πιο πολλά. Τα ‘χω χαμένα μ’ αυτό το νησί. Σ’ ένα χύμα περπάτημα, βγήκε ο ήλιος, ανακάλυψαμε ΑΥΤΟ!!!
Πολλές φορές θα έχω περάσει από κοντά, δίπλα του μπορεί, και δεν το είδα! Και το βρήκα χτες, οι άλλες είχαν μείνει πίσω, έπεσα πάνω του για την ακρίβεια, μέσα στον αέρα και την σχεδόν ομίχλη.
Ένα ιδιόκτητο ορειβατικό καταφύγιο!!! Και σε τι στυλ!!!
Δεν θα πω περισσότερα. Δεν ξέρω αν κάνει. Θα πω όμως, γιατί είναι σπουδαίο, ότι ψάχνοντας στο δίκτυο, βρήκα ότι είναι οι ίδιοι που έχουν βγάλει έναν εντυπωσιακό χάρτη μονοπατιών!!!
Δεν είναι βέβαια τα περισσότερα σημαδεμένα. Είναι όμως διαδρομές που γίνονται, έχω κάνει αρκετές —- ουφ, ουφ. Ας είναι καλά οι άνθρωποι. Όποιος ξέρει και θέλει, μπορεί. Νομίζω πως έχει μια σημασία και να μένει μόνιμα στο νησί. Τέτοιες δουλειές δεν είναι καλοκαιρινές αρπαχτές.
